Gouache Resist

For these illustrations, I first did a rough pencil sketch, and then painted the image with gouache, leaving some of the paper showing through. Then I coated the entire drawing with India ink. Once the ink dried , I submerged the painting under a running faucet and wherever the paper showed through it was stained black. The gouache then resisted the ink, letting the bright colours shine through, creating final images that look like a hybrid of woodcut or pastel renderings. The three carrot drawings are part of my personal portfolio, while the others appeared in a trio of 2001 children’s books written by Susan Boroughs that I illustrated for Curriculum Plus: New Bikes, The Twins’ Halloween, and The Twins.
